Our Mission

To take new officials and train them to be the best officials that they can be. We will train them so they know the mechanics and rules of the game. We want our officials to be efficient, educated in their sports, and promote good sportsmanship. Our officials will be working with children and coaches to promote fairness and the enjoyment of their games. Two of the most important issues are safety and sportsmanship.

 Association Profile

The original name of the association was Michigan Umpires Association. Donald Moore and three other gentlemen founded the Association in 1955. The governing body, (President Secretary, Treasurer) were all being held by different individuals.
In 1978 Mr. Moore decided to retire from officiating and asked his friend, Dick Weiss, to run for president of the association. Mr. Weiss agreed and was elected by the membership as president of Michigan Umpires Association. In 1982 Mr. Weiss became sole owner of Michigan Umpires Association, and held the positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer. The name was changed to Michigan Officials Association. A Board of Directors was formed and bylaws adopted.

Today the association is under the same leadership. We conduct training classes for new officials in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Softball before each new season begins. The Association is very proud of its training program.

Michigan Officials Association has officials now officiating in little league, high school varsity and college levels.

Membership Information

You must be registered with the MHSAA.  If you are new to a sport, you must attend training classes. There are no fees for the training classes.  Members must attend rule and mechanic meetings for the sports they will be officiating in.  MOA feels that officiating is an ongoing training process and that is why you must attend the sports meetings. Our association assigns games to everyone that attends the meetings.
